Rashielee Care Home celebrates playlists success

A care home in Erskine using personalised music to improve the lives of residents living with dementia has been awarded Certified status from Playlist for Life.

Rashielee undertook Playlist for Life’s Certified training course, providing their staff with the knowledge and skills to use personalised playlists to deliver person-centred care for all residents.

The training and support package was tailored to Rashielee and available to every member of staff in the home.

For more than 10 years we have delivered specialised training to health and social care professionals, and the most profound benefits of personalised playlists are evident in settings that adapt a ‘whole home’ approach: where meaningful music is used as an essential part of a person’s care plan.

Care homes that undertake our training and provide evidence that playlists are being used as an essential part of care are awarded with our certified plaque.  This allows the home to showcase their commitment to improving wellbeing for residents and staff alike through the use of personalised playlists.

At Rashielee, we are dedicated to trying non-pharmacological methods of reducing distress and to ensuring that people feel connected to their communities. Playlist helps us to achieve this.

Improving lives of residents through personally meaningful music

Personally meaningful music is a scientifically-proven non-pharmacological intervention with multiple benefits.

Robert Sinclair, Nursing Assistant at Rashielee said:

“I think having a playlist has changed everything with all the residents. It helps their wellbeing, it helps ours seeing the positive impact on behaviour, mood – just seeing smiles. Happy residents, happy team.”

Jennifer Carruthers, Deputy Manager, told us about how music benefited one resident, Janetta.

“Music is the fuel that lights Janetta’s heart, it awakens her. I have used music from Janetta’s playlist when she feels sad, unloved and lonely but also when she is happy. It helps me to connect to Janetta so that we share an experience. The real Janetta comes out and steps away from her dementia mask. I felt helpless when Janetta was sad, when she would cry that nobody loved her. With music, I can show my love for Janetta in involving her and sharing an experience – a good laugh and sing song!”

Playlist for Life staff attended a musical tea party at the care home to celebrate its completion of the training.

“It was a joy to visit Rashielee and award staff this plaque in recognition of their hard work and dedication to embedding playlists in their care. What has struck me most is how beneficial the training has been for not just the residents and their families, but the staff too. Rashielee is a special place.
