Sultans of Swing – Dire Straits
Sadly, we lost my dad at a young age, but this song takes me back to my favourite moments together, in the car listening to music.
During the epic guitar solo, my dad once said: “Wouldn’t be amazing to play an instrument that well?”, after which I decided to get my hands on a guitar and learn how to play it; one of the best decisions I ever made!
Harvest Moon – Neil Young
Although months of dance lessons to nail our first dance almost drove me to despair (unlike my wife, I am a terrible dancer), our actual first dance made me fall in love with my wife and this wonderful love song even more.
Jesus of Suburbia – Green Day
What started as a classic teenage-angst love of punk-pop/rock turned into an obsession and admiration of a band that really captured the times with the timeless American Idiot album. Green Day was my first ever gig and experiencing Jesus of Suburbia (an 8+ minute mini punk rock opera) live, remains one of my absolute highlights at a concert!
I Want to Break Free – Queen
Queen Greatest Hits II, the album that really sparked my love of music. It’s the first album I ‘stole’ of my parents in my early teens and it takes me back to simpler times. It’s full of great songs, but ‘I Want To Break Free’ remains the firm favourite. Years later, when I saw the famous video for the first time, my love for the song, and the band, reached new levels!
Oh My Sweet Carolina (live) – Ryan Adams
In short, my favourite song. Vivid storytelling, a melodic whispering voice and delicate guitar playing form just the start of my praise for this beautifully crafted song. Find a comfy chair, grab a cuppa and enjoy!
